In short, a science that helps others learn and grow by changing the environment around them. A behavior analyst will write up a behavior plan, insurance will approve the plan, and they or a registered behavior technician (RBT) will implement therapy according to the written plan.
ABA cannot occur without consent. It works primarily on systems of reinforcement, meaning that the goals we work on must have value to the learner. The behavior team uses data collected on behavior to make decisions. We also train parents and any other adults in the home on how to run the program so that the family receives support on all fronts.

Speech therapy is a treatment that helps a person communicate, however that may look for them! It aids in expression, connection, and understanding. You will work with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to set up goals and the therapist will implement the treatment plan as written. SLPs are trained to treat a variety of communication impairments and challenges with a plethora of root causes.
Speech therapy can help a learner comprehend language, gain clarity in expression, problem-solve, and connect with others.
-
Occupational therapy is a treatment that helps you live your life! Occupational therapists (OTs) use a suite of tools and interventions to help a person live a life that is meaningful for them. Because these skilled therapists can intervene on a wide spectrum of challenges, each session can look different. Occupational therapy can look like play, sensory engagement, job preparation, use of adaptive tools, academic work, or practicing activities of daily living, depending on what the learner needs.
An OT will conduct an assessment and identify goals based on the results; these goals inform therapy moving forward.
-
For kids, physical therapy (PT) is an intervention that helps them use their bodies the way they want to. A PT will help a child reach developmental milestones, ease pain or discomfort, improve mobility, and support with adaptive technology. Pediatric PTs will conduct a session that focuses on movement in a way that is meaningful for the learner, derived from goals that resulted from formal evaluation.

Mental health counselors work with their clients to establish goals, address emotional or cognitive needs, manage stress, and change behavior the way the client finds meaningful. Mental health counselors help with adaptive skills, flexibility, coping, family and relationship challenges, self-esteem, transitions, and any other mental health goal the client may share. Therapists work together with their clients to identify goals and build a way to meet those goals. Therapy usually looks like talking; ideally in a comfy space where the client can feel safe!

All insurances are different, so there will be some variability, but the process will roughly look like this:
When you email Praxis, a clinician will reach out via phone or email to coordinate an introduction. We will introduce ourselves, ask you some questions about your concerns, and invite you to ask any questions you may have.
If we determine that we might be a good fit for your family, the office staff will reach out for your information to submit to insurance. This process can take a while. Hint: it does tend to go faster when you contact your insurance yourself! We will also give you the intake paperwork at this time.
If/when insurance approves and intake is completed, we will conduct a functional behavior assessment. We will meet you, meet your learner, interview you, conduct observations, and write up the assessment and behavior plan. We will review that document with you and get your signed consent to move forward.
Insurance can take a while at this point also.
Once insurance approves the plan, we’re ready to go! You will meet your clinical team, work out a schedule, and started!

You will always be encouraged to choose who works with your family.
However, Praxis cannot guarantee immediate clinician fit with all families. If you choose not to work with a particular therapist, it may take some time before an appropriate therapist can be assigned to your case.
Praxis Therapy Services is always willling to refer out at any point if you feel we are not meeting your needs sufficiently.

It’s just what it sounds like!
It is an important part of the process that you participate in your child’s therapy. Most insurance funders require it.
We aim to keep sessions as naturalistic and productive as possible. Your analyst will work with you on running the behavior plan, problem-solving and collaborating on challenges you run into, and support you in achieving success.

We hear you. We’ve heard them, too.
Like any medical practice or therapy, ABA has a checkered history. It has a history of misuse and an unethical past. And, like any medical practice or therapy, there are poorly trained or outright harmful professionals. There are many stories online about these experiences. We are listening and growing in response to these stories.
Proper, evidence-based ABA is based in reinforcement, built relationships, and advocacy for our most vulnerable learners. We work closely with doctors, SLPs, OTs, and other professionals to make sure we are giving our learners the most opportunities we can to build the future they want.
Think of ABA as a hammer. It’s a tool. Some people pick up hammers and build beautiful houses. Some people use hammers to build shacks that will fall down under a stiff wind. And some people use hammers to bash in other people’s knees. We don’t blame the hammer. We teach poor builders to be more effective or to choose other tools, and we stop others who would do harm. And, most importantly, we keep building beautiful houses.
